Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was handed 18 months of supervised probation and a one-year suspended prison sentence Friday after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, according to USA Today Sports.

Phelps, who won 18 gold medals in four Olympics as a swimmer, expressed regret and told the judge that he has completed a recovery program in Arizona and plans to participate in Alcoholics Anonymous.

“For me doing the 45-day program I was able to find out a lot about myself,” Phelps said. “I know I have the tools to move forward, to move past this ... I will continue to grow, and I will help other people to not make this mistake ... I’m looking forward to a bright future.”

Phelps was pulled over on Sept. 30 in Baltimore for going 84 miles per hour in a 45-miles per hour zone. His blood alcohol level was registered at .14 (nearly twice the legal limit in Maryland) and he was charged with driving under the influence, speeding and crossing double lines.
