Fantasy football advice, Week 14: Who to start/sit for Panthers vs. Saints

Neither team has a winning record, but there’s every chance one will make it into the playoffs.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers started the season 2-0, but have gone 1-8-1 since to render themselves afterthoughts in the NFC South. The New Orleans Saints, meanwhile, haven't been above .500 all season -- peaking at 4-4 -- but they still sit in a first-place tie with the division's best record, 5-7. Sunday, the two teams face each other.

The Panthers have running back DeAngelo Williams (hand) and tight end Greg Olsen (knee) on the week's injury report. Olsen should be fine to play Sunday, though Williams is expected to miss. The Saints, meanwhile, are expected to have running back Khiry Robinson back Sunday for the first time in the last seven games.

New Orleans will host Sunday’s game, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Let’s look at the fantasy names to consider:

PANTHERS

Start 'em: Last week might have been rough for Kelvin Benjamin, but he had 35 fantasy points in his two games before that; he's a reasonable WR2. ... Despite his injury, everyone assumes Greg Olsen will play Sunday, and if he plays, he's a definite start.

Start 'em?: There just doesn't appear to be any upside to Cam Newton's game anymore; he's a mid-range QB2 at best. ... Against New Orleans' defense, with DeAngelo Williams likely out, Jonathan Stewart would actually be a decent flex play this week, and maybe more.

Sit 'em: In his last four games, Graham Gano has averaged barely four fantasy points. He's not an option. ... The Carolina defense has been shockingly bad this season.

SAINTS

Start 'em: After a mildly disappointing season, Drew Brees has really rebounded the last couple weeks, with 27 and 30 fantasy points. He's once again a must-start, top-tier guy. ... Mark Ingram's best days have already happened, but he's done enough to be a low-end RB2 at worst, even with the team's other weapons back. ... Kenny Stills has exploded on the scene since Brandin Cooks was lost; he's a good WR2. ... Jimmy Graham did nothing a week ago, but come on, it's Jimmy Graham.

Start 'em?: We haven't seen much of anything from Marques Colston this season; he's a very low-end flex play at absolute best. ... You'd expect Shayne Graham to put up more numbers with that offense, but he hasn't reached even 10 points in his last five games.

Sit 'em: Both Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson are back and apparently healthy, but with Ingram's development, those guys aren't fantasy-playable. ... The Saints' defense is so, so bad.

SUMMARY

Start in every league: Kelvin Benjamin, Greg Olsen, Drew Brees, Mark Ingram, Kenny Stills, Jimmy Graham

Start if you're desperate: Cam Newton, Jonathan Stewart, Marques Colston, Shayne Graham

Bench: Graham Gano, Carolina defense, Pierre Thomas, Khiry Robinson, New Orleans defense
