2014 Winter Olympics: The curling is starting!

Lots of events on tap, but CURLING CURLING CURLING.

Clive Mason

Good morning! The Olympics are on! You should watch the Olympics. Full NBC telecast schedule is available here.

Early on, training for men’s freestyle slopestyle skiing and speed skating are on the NBC Sports Network, and the first two runs for women’s single luge are on the schedule. For sports you might see outside of an Olympiad, women’s hockey with Finland and Canada gets underway on MSNBC at 10 a.m. ET. Finland needs to recover from a 3-1 loss to the Americans, but Canada is one of the top-two-ranked teams in the nation, so this is a tall task for the Finns.

In early afternoon action, the NBC Sports Network is showing training sessions for women’s ski jumping (a new event for the Sochi Olympics) and freestyle skiing slopestyle. In actual competition, you can also see the women’s curling match -- CURLING! -- between Sweden and Great Britain; Sweden took gold in women’s curling in Vancouver. Monday marks the first day of curling action in both men’s and women’s competition, and the men will be going through the first two games of round robin action on Monday. Now clearly you’re saying, “Two curling matches in one day?! Impossible!” But listen, pal; this is the Olympics. You curl hard or you curl home!

By the late afternoon, NBC is going back on with events like the men’s 12.5k pursuit biathlon (anyone else nervous about a gun sport event called “pursuit”? this isn’t a “most dangerous game” type of thing, right?) and the men’s moguls, including Alex Bilodeau, a Canadian hero in 2012 as he captured gold in the event in Vancouver.

If you’re interested in watching American curling (duh), that’ll be going on at 5 p.m. on CNBC; the Americans face curling powerhouse Norway and these powerhouse Norwegian uniforms. Simultaneously on the NBC Sports Network, the American women will face Switzerland in hockey; Switzerland was just whipped 5-0 (is it 5-nil? do they say nil in European hockey or just the soccer?)

The real business comes at night with the NBC primetime coverage, which is just how NBC wants it, so you don’t really have a choice with what you’ll be seeing that night. According to NBC, on the docket is women’s skiing in the super-combined and men’s speed skating in 500m and the 1500m short track. Look for American J.R. Celski to make noise in the 1500m.

That’s a lot of Olympics! And it’s curling day! Hooray!
