Julia Mancuso won a gold in Torino 2006, but that was the American’s most recent first-place finish at a championship. She flew through the downhill portion of the super combined on Monday in Sochi, but faltered ever so slightly in the slalom portion, allowing Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch to slip in and grab the gold medal.

Charles Hamelin of Canada won the always-contentious, crash-ridden Men’s 1500m short-track speed skating event with a time of 2:14.985. Hamelin barely edged out Tianyu Han from China, who finished at 2:15.055. Han for his part took the silver away from Korea-born Russian Viktor Ahn, who had to settle with a bronze medal for his 2:15.062 time. Canada jumped the USA into second place in the medal count with the win.
