2014 Olympic curling results: American teams fall on day 1
Curling’s first day of action proved a tough one for both American teams, while the Canadian men’s squad split its first two contests as the team tries to win gold for the third straight Olympics.
Curling officially began on Monday morning, with both the men’s and women’s teams getting underway in round-robin action.
For those unfamiliar, curling is a sport in which competitors slide a stone toward a target on the ice while teammates attempt to steer the stone with brushes. It may not be the most pulse-pounding sport, but those flashy uniforms sure keep viewers entertained.

— Jay Adams (@Jayman_IWS) February 10, 2014 Canada is the favorite on the men’s side after winning gold in both 2006 and 2010, while the Swedish women’s team is coming off two straight gold medals as well.
Men’s Results
The men’s teams got underway early on Monday, as Canada bested Germany 11-8 and host country Russia fell to Great Britain 7-4. In a heated battle between Sweden and Switzerland, who took home the bronze back in 2010, the Swedes came out on top 7-5.

Be sure to keep SB Nation's beautiful, constantly-updated medal tracker by your side all Olympics long. The American men began their curling slate at 10 a.m. ET against Norway, who won the silver in Vancouver. The Norwegians proved to be a tough matchup for the Americans, as Team USA fell 7-4.
Elsewhere in the men’s competition, Canada lost to the Swiss 5-4, splitting its first two contests on the first day of curling action. Meanwhile, Sweden looks like a strong contender after beating Great Britain 8-4 to win both its matches on Monday, while Denmark handed Russia its second loss, coming from behind for a thrilling 11-10 victory in a back-and-forth contest that went into an extra end to break up a 10-10 tie.
The men’s teams are back in action on Tuesday with one session of games. The Americans will be looking for their first win of the Olympics against China at 5 a.m. ET. Canada and Sweden are set for a showdown on Tuesday as well.
Women’s Results
The USA women’s team fell to Switzerland in its first round-robin match, 7-4. The Americans will look to grab their first win tomorrow against Russia at 12 a.m. ET and also have their third match of the Olympics against the women from Great Britain at 10 a.m ET.
Sweden began its quest for a third straight women’s gold by beating Great Britain 6-4. In the day’s other two matches, Russia took down Denmark 7-4, and Canada trounced China 9-2.
After playing in just one session on Monday, the women’s teams will be front and center on Tuesday with two different sessions starting at 12 a.m. ET and then again at 10 a.m ET.
