Six gold medals were handed out on Wednesday and some of the disappointment from Tuesday was erased with Kaitlyn Farrington claiming the gold medal in the Ladies’ Snowboard Halfpipe.

The podium came down to 1.25 point between gold and bronze, with some wonderful riding at the Rosa Khutor extreme center. Team USA’s win helped ease Shani Davis’ loss in speed skating, where he failed to capture his third straight gold.

Alpine Skiing

Two gold medals were handed out in Women’s Downhill, yes two. Tina Maze of Slovakia and Switzerland’s Dominique Gisin finshed in a dead heat, both crossing the line in 1:41.57.

Team USA’s chances hinged on Julia Mancuso after Linsday Vonn was forced out of Sochi with injuries. Mancuso dominated the downhill portion of the Women’s’ Super Combined event, but it didn’t translate into the solo where she failed to medal and finished in eighth place.

There wasn’t much of a surprise in the Men’s Individual Gundersen with favorite Eric Frenzel taking the gold medal after dominating both the ski jump and cross country race.

Team USA wasn’t expected to medal, and that help to form with Bill Demong finishing best among the Americans in 24th place.

Russia continued its dominance on the ice with a 1-2 finish in Pairs Figure Skating. Wednesday marked the close of competition with the free program and Team USA failed to medal with a ninth place finish by Marissa Castelli and Simon Snapir.

It was a rough day for Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford who were seen as likely medal winners only to fall back and finish in seventh.

It was a disappointing result for Shani Davis, who looked to become a three-time gold medalist at the Olympic level. Unfortunately that didn’t come to pass, as Davis fell off his first lap time to finish in eighth place.

Netherlands dominated the podium once again in speed skating, claiming gold and bronze.

Result Country Name
