2014 Sochi Olympics: Event schedule for Thursday

The American men’s hockey team gets its Olympiad underway with a tough challenge from the Slovakians, and curling and speed skating show up big on Thursday.

SB Nation 2014 Winter Olympic Coverage

It’s Day 8 of the Olympics, and the popular team sports are in full swing. Hockey and curling are both in round robin action, which means there’s at least two channels running some sort of Olympic action (with a heavy emphasis on hockey, obviously) virtually all day long until NBC’s primetime coverage takes over at night.

The American women’s hockey team has Thursday off, but the men take the ice against powerhouse Slovakia at 7:30 ET. That’ll be shown live on the NBC Sports Network, which is pretty dope.

Curling features both American teams in action, with the men squaring off against Great Britain and the women facing Japan. There’s also Norway vs. Sweden, which you know is going to be a war (of silly pants).

There’s a bevy of speed skating events on Thursday as well, including five on the mesmerizing short track. There are two medals at stake, with the women competing for gold in the 500m short track and 1000m, uh, not-short track.

The luge wraps up competition with the team relay competition, featuring three races (men’s single, women’s single, double) compiled in one last shot at the gold. Germany is the prohibitive favorite here; it took gold in each of those three individual events in the last few days. But luge is fun and there are Americans involved (including bronze medalist Erin Hamlin), so watch this when you can.

The men’s slopestyle ski goes down Thursday, and it features four Americans vying for qualification and the finals later in the morning. Four Americans are vying for a spot in the finals, but we’d like to highlight the lone Briton in the mix: James Woods.

No really, his name is James Woods. And this is his Sochi profile:
