Brewers to discuss contract extension with Jean Segura, per report

Segura made the All-Star team in his first full big league season, but really struggled in the second half. Could he sign a long-term extension with the Brew Crew this spring?

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

The Milwaukee Brewers are expected to begin contract extension talks with shortstop Jean Segura in the coming weeks, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Segura, 24 in March, was all over the place during his first full season in the big leagues. He was phenomenal in the first half, batting .325/.363/.487 with 11 home runs, 36 RBI and 27 stolen bases. He was named to the All-Star team and was on his way to one of the better offensive seasons for a shortstop in recent memory.

The second half of the year really got the better of him, though, as he hit just .241 with a .583 OPS. His strikeout rate increased nearly four percent, he walked even less than before (3.5 percent), and he hit just one home run. It was pretty evident he had begun pressing at the plate by the time September rolled around. The young shortstop finished the year hitting .294/.329/.423 with a 3.4 WAR.

Even with his struggles in the second half, it’s not a big surprise to see the Brewers interested in signing him to a long-term deal. Segura still has five years of team control remaining, but given his potential as a five-tool weapon, it only makes sense for Milwaukee to kick the tires and see if they can lock him down to a team-friendly deal. At the very least, they could buy out his arbitration years and gain some cost-certainty for the foreseeable future.
