2014 Sochi Olympic results: Recap of Monday’s events and medals

Belarus brings home two gold medals, while the US and Russia remain tied in the medal count.

Three countries brought home multiple medals on Monday in Sochi -- the United States, Russia and...Belarus. Belarus actually won the day, bringing home two golds (the US and Russia each brought in a gold and a bronze), as Darya Domracheva continued her dominance of the Games.

That leaves the United States and Russia tied for the medal count lead with 18 apiece, but the host country holds the tiebreaker due to their higher number of silver medals (both countries have five golds).

Events delayed by fog

Men’s Snowboardcross and Men’s Biathlon, originally pushed back from Sunday, have been delayed again to Tuesday due to a lack of visibility.

Biathlon

Belarusian athlete Darya Domracheva won her third gold medal of the Olympics (most of any athlete) by dominating the 12.5 km mass start, more than 20 seconds ahead of second-place Gabriela Soukalova.

Bobsled

Jamaica’s bobsled team may have qualified for their first Olympics since 2002, but did not make it past the third heat after a poor run.

Brazil also has a bobsled team, and they survived a frightening crash during training Sunday.

Curling

The USA was knocked out of the medal hunt Tuesday, losing 6-3 to Switzerland and ending their time in Sochi with a 2-7 record -- the same as their 2010 mark in Vancouver. Russia defeated Germany 8-7, China won against Great Britain 6-5 and Denmark beat Norway 5-3.

In the women’s round robin, the USA lost 11-2 to South Korea, Japan defeated China 8-5 and Great Britain beat Russian 9-6 in the first round of the day. In the day’s second round, Switzerland beat China 10-6, Denmark emerged victorious over Great Britain 8-7, Sweden defeated Japan 8-4 and Canada won 9-4 against South Korea.

In the playoff draw, Sweden will be the top team on the men’s side, while Canada is on top of the women’s draw after an undefeated run through tournament play.

Figure skating

Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the Ice Dancing gold for the United States, causing Canadians to allege that the FIX WAS ON. Canada won silver, with Russia taking bronze in the event.

Freestyle skiing

Belarus brought home another gold, as Anton Kushnir dominated the Men’s Aerials final. Australia’s David Morris and China’s Zongyang Jia finished with the bronze and silver, respectively.

Hockey

The USA women dominated Sweden in the semifinal, winning 6-1 and setting up an appearance in the gold medal game against Canada. The Canadians defeated Switzerland 3-1 in their game Monday.
