The last day of the curling round-robin tournament has concluded and seven of the eight playoff teams from the men’s and women’s sides have been determined, but that leaves one empty spot. After a week on the ice, the final playoff entry has come down to a tiebreaker session between Norway and Great Britain on the men’s side that will take place at midnight ET on Tuesday for the right to play Sweden in the semifinals.

Great Britain fell to China, 6-5, and Norway lost to Denmark, 5-3, in action on Monday, dropping both teams to 5-4 for the tournament and in a tie for fourth place in the men’s draw. Norway defeated Great Britain once already on Sunday morning, 7-6, with the Norwegians taking the winning point on the 10th end of the match.

Elsewhere on the men’s side, Russia defeated Germany, 8-7, and the Swiss dropped the Americans, 6-3. The United States finished just 2-7 in the tournament, good for ninth place out of 10 competing countries. The Germans were last. Sweden (8-1) and Canada (7-2) will be the top two seeds in the playoff round, which begins on Wednesday.

There is no need for a tiebreaker on the women’s side. The Canadians defeated the Koreans, 9-4, on Monday to secure a perfect 9-0 record in the round-robin tournament and the top seed in the playoff round. Sweden, who beat Japan, 8-4, will finish 7-2 and with the second overall seed. Switzerland beat China, 10-6, on the final day to finish 5-4 and will be the third seed, while Great Britain also finished 5-4 after a 9-6 win over Russia and an 8-7 loss to Denmark. It will be the fourth seed. The Americans finished in last place, going 1-8 in the tournament.

Canada will face Great Britain and Sweden will match up with Switzerland in the playoff semifinals on Wednesday.
