2014 Olympic skiing schedule: Giant Slalom? I barely know ‘em!

Also, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen looks for a record 13th Winter Olympics medal in the biathlon, and the ever-insane Nordic combined.

Alpine action! This time it’s the giant slalom, as the women get set to tear the slopes up. This event was rescheduled from earlier, due to poor (see: un-wintery) weather conditions. American Julia Mancuso remains the best hope for bringing a medal back stateside, but the field is loaded with talent this year, including women’s downhill gold medalist Tina Maze of Slovenia.

There’s more biathlonin’ to do, as the men’s 15k mass start kicks off. This year’s 10 km gold medalist Ole Einar Bjoerndalen (whose name continues to amaze) is back for one last shot at glory this year. Get it? “Shot”? Because of the biathlon, and the guns in it. Bjoerndalen’s 40 years old, positively ancient by Olympic standards, and he’s vying for an all-time Winter Olympic record 13th medal. Not to get all subjective on you, but that would be pretty awesome to see. Bjoerndalen’s quest will be extraordinarily difficult, as he’s one of eight biathletes who have medaled already in Sochi that are competing in the race. So if he wants the record, he’ll have to earn it.

In the Nordic combined, the individual Gundersen large hill / 10 km competition goes down. For those not up on Nordic combined, it’s basically a ski jump followed by a cross-country skiing race — 10 kilometers, as you might have guessed. All of this for the same gold medal some ice dancers are competing for. It takes a type, we suppose.

Full schedule is below, via Sochi2014.com. All times are Eastern.
