Olympics 2014: What to watch for on Day 17

The U.S. hockey team has its bronze medal match, while alpine skiing concludes with the men’s slalom. Here are the top events to look forward to on Saturday.

SB Nation 2014 Winter Olympic Coverage

The 2014 Winter Olympics are starting to wind down, with Saturday being one of the last days of competition. On the other hand, that just means the events have more importance than ever. We have the men’s slalom to wrap up alpine skiing, the final speed skating race, and the United States men’s hockey team playing for bronze after a disappointing semifinal loss to Canada. Team USA will look to take out its frustrations on Finland.

Here are the top events to watch on Day 17 of the Sochi games.

Men’s ice hockey

The second time wasn’t the charm. The United States failed to avenge its Vancouver loss to Canada, losing, 1-0. Team USA will try to regroup and take the bronze medal against Finland. This game starts at 10 a.m. ET. The Finnish are in this round after losing to Sweden in the semifinals. Finland is looking to defend their bronze medal from 2010.

Alpine skiing

Alpine skiing reaches its conclusion on Saturday with the men’s slalom events, which begin at 7:45 a.m. American Ted Ligety is the fan favorite after an outstanding gold medal run in the giant slalom, but he’ll have tough competition from Frenchmen Steve Missillier and Alexis Pinturault, who both medaled in giant slalom. Croatia’s Ivica Kostelic is another top contender, taking home the silver in this event in Vancouver. Andre Myhrer of Sweden is another name to look out for.

Speed skating

The long track events come to a close with the men’s and women’s team pursuits. The women start their semifinal run at 8:30 a.m. and the men decide their medals at 8:51 a.m. The United States, Canada, Norway and South Korea are left in the women’s field, with Team USA desperate to finally get on the podium on the last day of competition. On the men’s side, The Netherlands will try to add to its mountain of 21 medals in speed skating.
