Update: Russia holds lead in medal count over Team USA

With half of Saturday’s events in Sochi now in the books, the United States and Russia remain tied atop the medal count leaderboard.

The Americans and Russians have brought home 27 medals so far. Of those 27, Team USA has nine gold, seven silver and 11 bronze. Russia has been a bit more successful in their medal-placing events, claiming 10 gold, 10 silver and seven bronze.

It just hasn’t been a great winter games for the American athletes participating in Sochi; despite being favored in quite a few events, they just haven’t been able to get over the hump to dominate the way some thought they would.

In third place is Norway with 25 medals, 11 of which are gold. No nation has more gold than the Norwegians. Norway won all three medals in women’s cross country skiing on Saturday to push ahead of Canada, which now sits in fourth place with 24 medals. The Netherlands rounds out the top-five with 22 medals.

Team USA will have a chance to pick up some more hardware later on on Saturday as the men’s hockey team goes for bronze against Finland and skier Ted Ligety looks to win his second gold medal in the slalom.
