American skier Ted Ligety, who already won one gold medal for the United States in Sochi, failed to complete his second run in the men’s slalom on Saturday after he wiped out halfway down the slope.

Ligety entered the final run in decent shape, sitting in sixth place after completing his first run in 47.56 seconds. He was 0.86 seconds behind the leader, a substantial but not fate-sealing deficit at the time. He lost control during his second run and was clearly frustrated, even though he admitted winning two medals was going to be incredibly difficult.

The only other American skier in the event, Nolan Kasper, finished in 13th place with a composite time of 1:44.22.

Mario Matt of Austria won the gold medal with a stellar time of 1:41.84. Matt posted the best time in his first run and was able to hold off his countryman Marcel Hirscher, who took home silver with a spiffy 1:42.12 time. Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway finished in 1:42.67 to win bronze, edging Italy’s Stefano Gross by 0.05 seconds.
