Winter Olympics 2014 results: Canada defeats Sweden, takes hockey gold

Team Canada takes the final medal of the Sochi Games, while a dominant performance by Russia in cross-country skiing and bobsled gave the hosts two more gold medals.

The 2014 Winter Olympics closed Saturday with three final events. Canada won the most anticipated event of the Games, and the host country cemented its lead in the medal count with four podium finishes in the final day.

Ice Hockey

Canada took the final medal of the Sochi Games, winning the ice hockey final over Sweden, 3-0. Team Canada jumped out to an early lead over the Swedes on a Jonathan Toews first-period goal. A Sidney Crosby goal late in the second period doubled the Canadians’ advantage. Chris Kunitz added a third goal in the final period, sealing the victory for Team Canada.

Sweden gets the silver medal, and Finland won the bronze on Saturday.

Cross-Country

Russia swept the medals in the final cross-country skiing event of the Games, the men’s 50 km freestyle. Alexander Legkov edged out fellow countrymen Maxim Vylegzhanin and Ilia Chernousov by less than a second to take the gold. Vylegzhanin won the silver, while Chernousov takes home the bronze. Norway’s Martin Johnsrud Sundby finished fourth.

American Noah Hoffman finished 26th, more than a minute behind Legkov. Brian Gregg was 51st.

Bobsled

The Russian team of Dmitry Trunenkov, Alexander Zubkov, Alexey Voevoda, and Alexey Negodaylo took home the final gold medal of the Games for the host country, winning the men’s four-man bobsled with less than a tenth of a second to spare. The Russians posted the fastest run in Sunday’s third round to build a lead, then iced the victory with a solid final run.

The Latvian team of Janis Strenga, Arvis Vilkaste, Oskars Melbardis, and Daumants Dreiskens took the silver, while the American team of Steve Holcomb, Steve Langton, Curt Tomasevicz, and Chris Fogt won the bronze. The American bobsled team takes the final medal of the Games for the United States.
