Shaun White pulls out of slopestyle after injury on ‘intimidating’ course

White jammed his wrist during a training run on Tuesday, making him one of several Olympic athletes to already suffer injuries on a treacherous slopestyle course.

United States snowboarder Shaun White has pulled out of the Olympic slopestyle event after suffering a wrist injury in training on Tuesday, according to NBC’s Nick Zaccardi.

White, who came to Sochi in search of two gold medals, fell and jammed his wrist Tuesday on a slopestyle course which has already proven to be quite challenging. White called the course “intimidating,” according to Eddie Pells of the Associated Press, and several other riders have also fallen victim to the treacherous slopes.

Torstein Horgmo of Norway, one of the favorites heading into Sochi, broke his collarbone on Monday while training. Shortly after White injured his wrist, Marika Enne of Finland suffered a concussion after a hard fall. The multiple injuries and complaints from other riders has forced officials to modify the course in advance of the qualifying.

White was initially hopeful he could still participate in the competition, but those hopes have been officially dashed. White is already dealing with several nagging injuries, and now he’ll try to heal up a bit more in preparation for the halfpipe competition, which begins next Tuesday. White is the two-time defending champion of the halfpipe event.

This is the first Olympics in which slopestyle is an event, and it’s also the first official competition of the Sochi Olympics.
