Men’s 5000m speed skating medal event: Netherlands dominate signature event

The Netherlands have a storied history in speed skating and a new chapter was added on Saturday with a dominant performance in the Men’s 5000m event. Sven Kramer took home the gold with a new Olympic record of 6:10.76, while fellow countrymen Jan Blokhuijsen and Jorrit Bergsma took home the silver and bronze, respectively.

Pressure was on Kramer following a campaign in Vancouver in 2010 when he took home the gold in this event but was disqualified in the 10,000m for a lane change violation. He had been the focus of media attention in Holland leading up to Sochi, and medaling in his first event will get the monkey off his back -- for now.
Team USA failed to make the podium with a trio of skaters who were unable to post fast times. The best finish came from Emery Lehman, who posted a time of 6:29.94 -- good for 15th. The short track boasts the country’s best chances at winning a medal, which will take place beginning on Monday.
