Western Sydney Wanderers scored in the first minute of their midweek Champions League game. Since then, the A-League’s premiership holders have been held scoreless over 179 minutes and allowed five goals. The most recent two came against Newcastle Jets in a surprising result at Pirtek Stadium on Sunday. Newcastle got a goal in each half and won 2-0 to revive hopes for a finals position.

A surprise win by the Jets brings the Newcastle side back into contention for spot in the finals.

Kew Jaliens headed in the opener after thirty-seven minutes thanks to an Andrew Hoole cross. The goal came shortly after Emile Heskey forced a good save from Ante Covic. Western Sydney’s goalkeeper was needed again in the second half to deny Adam Taggart just before the hour. Yet Taggart got his revenge when his 64th minute shot deflected off of Matthew Spiranovic and escaped Covic.
The Wanderers will travel across town next weekend with a winnable Sydney Derby at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday March 8. Newcastle will try to create momentum from the big win when they host resurgent Melbourne Heart at the Hunter Stadium on March 8.
