David Moyes sacked by Manchester United

The axe has finally fallen on Manchester United’s embattled manager, who didn’t even manage a full season in the Manchester United dugout.

Following intense speculation throughout Monday, Manchester United have today announced that their manager, David Moyes, has been dismissed from his position. The club's statement reads:

Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the Club. The Club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.

His dismissal comes after a season of disappointment on the pitch and discontent off it. Perhaps the most damning indictment is in the litany of unwanted records that have piled up: first home and away losses to both Merseyside clubs in their history; first home defeat to Swansea in their history; first home defeat to Newcastle since 1972; first home defeat to West Bromwich Albion since 1978. Champions last season; seventh this. No Champions League football for at least seventeen months, the first time that United have missed out on the competition since Alex Ferguson started collecting titles.

As for his replacements, Ryan Giggs will take charge in the immediate future. Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone, Holland's Louis van Gaal and Borussia Dortmund's Jurgen Klopp are the names being mentioned for the permanent role, though the German club have today denied that their man is going anywhere. Full coverage of the fallout can be found on SB Nation's United blog, The Busby Babe.
