The draw may determine the fates of some horses, giving some a better starting spot than others.

Each year, the draw determines where each horse will be slotted into the gates. For some the rail is preferable, while for others it is better to be toward the middle. To do the drawing, the Preakness uses a pill pull system which means that small numbered balls are selected in a blind draw.
Preakness Stakes
The second leg of the Triple Crown has 14 starting spots, allowing for a large number of horses to be involved in the event. The draw itself will take place on the Pimlico grounds and likely bring in a substantial audience, as usual.
California Chrome will be getting the most attention after winning the Kentucky Derby on May 3. He will look to continue his run at the triple crown.
