Black-Eyed Susan Stakes 2014: Post positions, odds and more

The focus at Pimlico is on the Preakness Stakes, but the 90th running of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes will be the highlight of the action on Friday.

Rob Carr

All eyes will be on California Chrome and his attempt to win another Triple Crown leg at the Preakness on Saturday, but before he and the other Preakness contenders take to the Pimlico track, 11 3-year-old fillies will take center stage. The 90th running of the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes will headline the race card on Friday.

Update: Stopchargingmaria wins the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes

The 1 1/8-mile race appears to be wide open with Untapable -- the undisputed top 3-year-old filly -- skipping this weekend’s festivities. Untapable blew away the field at the Kentucky Oaks, but with her absence, Stopchargingmaria is the Black-Eyed Susan favorite at 7-2. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Stopchargingmaria has three career wins, including two in graded races. Pletcher has another strong contender with Sloane Square a 5-1 morning-line favorite, the third-best odds. Euphrosyne, trained by Untapable trainer Steve Asmussen, is the second favorite at 4-1 odds.

The deciding factor in the race could be which horse runs best in the slop with heavy rain in the forecast on Friday. Some of the horses have never run on a sloppy track, including Joint Return, a 15-1 morning-line favorite. The conditions could lead to an unexpected outcome with fans, jockeys and trainers alike finding out how well the horses will do in the conditions.

“I don’t think so, but you really don’t know until you try it,” Joint Return trainer John Servis said when asked if sloppy conditions could be an issue, via CBS DC.

The race is scheduled to post at 4:47 p.m. ET with NBC Sports Network handling the coverage. The broadcast is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Here is a complete look at the coverage, morning line odds and post positions.
