No matter how you tune in, California Chrome is the horse to beat.

The 139th Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown, runs Saturday. Kentucky Derby champion California Chrome is heavily-favored to win in the 10-horse field at Pimlico.
California Chrome, which was the first California-bred horse to win the Derby since 1962 and first since Big Brown in 2008 to win the Run for the Roses as the favorite at lower than 3-1 odds, is the 3-5 favorite to win the Preakness, according to OddsShark. But Orb was the newly minted Derby champion last year and the odds-on favorite at 1-1 to win the Preakness last year, and he never really challenged in Oxbow’s wire-to-wire win. Orb finished fourth.
According to the oddsmakers, California Chrome’s primary challengers will include 5-1 second choice Social Inclusion and a pair of horses at 10-1 odds, Bayern and Ride On Curlin. Neither Social Inclusion nor Bayern ran in the Kentucky Derby. Ride On Curlin finished seventh in that race, but will have a different jockey at Pimlico; Calvin Borel will ride Ria Antonia instead of Ride On Curlin, and Joel Rosario will mount Ride On Curlin in the No. 10 post.
