2014 Preakness picks and predictions: California Chrome the popular choice

Most experts like California Chrome to win the Preakness and have a shot at the Triple Crown.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome is a 3-5 favorite to win the 2014 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, and most experts like the colt to come away from the race victorious.

SB Nation’s Dan Rubenstein has California Chrome as his top choice, and Rubenstein also likes Ride On Curlin, Kid Cruz and Dynamic Impact. Over at SB Nation’s horse racing blog And Down The Stretch They Come, David Wheatley’s top three picks are California Chrome, Ring Weekend and Kid Cruz.

At The New York Times, both horse racing experts like California Chrome. Joe Drape has Ring Weekend to place and Kid Cruz to show, while Melissa Hoppert has Social Inclusion and Bayern.

Tim Layden of Sports Illustrated picks California Chrome to win, Ride On Curlin to place and Kid Cruz to show.

The Sporting News asked three experts to make their picks, and two of them actually broke from convention. Richard Eng of the Las Vegas Review-Journal went with the favorite, but Sporting News contributor Brad Telias chose Social Inclusion and The Linemakers contributor Mike Wilkening picked Bayern.

And finally, ESPN’s Lane Gold offered up four value picks to possibly knock off California Chrome. Gold’s four value picks are Golden a Rod, Bayern, Kid Cruz and Ride On Curlin.
