College World Series 2014 schedule: Eliminations begin on Monday

Texas and Louisville face off in a win-or-go-home showdown while UC Irvine and Vanderbilt play in the winners’ bracket.

Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

By Monday night, there will be one less team in Omaha. Day 3 of the 2014 College World Series brings the first elimination game, a losers’ bracket showdown between Texas and Louisville. The two teams that put them there, UC Irvine and Vanderbilt respectively, will meet in the winners’ bracket game later in the evening.

Texas was shocked by a late UC Irvine rally on Saturday, losing 3-1. Louisville, the only team back in Omaha from a season ago, fell 5-3 to Vandy. Whoever loses on Monday will be gone; the winner will face a tough road to the finals. The winner of the losers’ bracket game will have to reel off another three consecutive wins to make it out of the group stage.

On the flip side, the victor of the winners’ bracket game earns a bye into the group finals. They won’t have to play again until Wednesday, and then will only need to take one of two from whichever team comes back up to face them.
