Larry Sanders could seek treatment at a rehab facility

The Bucks’ center has a nightmare season in 2013-14. It now appears that significant off-court troubles may have been to blame.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Larry Sanders’ 2013-14 season went about as poorly as anyone could script. He suffered multiple injuries and had off-court troubles just one year after signing a four-year, $44 million early extension.

Worse, that off-court trouble may be more serious than we anticipated, because Sanders is apparently going to rehab this summer. Via Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal-Times:

Contrary to a report, the market for Sanders is virtually non-existent as he not only has been plagued by off-court issues - he is expected to enter a rehab facility this summer - but will be entering the first of a four-year, $44 million contract next season.

This implies foul play with alcohol and/or drugs, which is a scary thought if true. Sanders’ first injury happened after he got in a bar fight in November; he broke his thumb after an altercation in which police said he broke bottles over two people’s heads and threw punches. He also fractured his right orbital bone near his eye after being elbowed by James Harden in February.

When he did play, his production dipped dramatically. One year after nearly averaging a double double, Sanders put up only seven points and seven rebounds per game in 25 minutes per contest. His defense, a huge factor for his rise in 2012-13, fell off dramatically. The Bucks in general were a mess, but Sanders’ dip was the most mystifying cause of their demise. We now have more clues as to why it happened.

Here’s hoping that, if this report is indeed true, Sanders gets the treatment he needs and responds well next season.
