College World Series 2014 schedule: Ole Miss-Virginia postponed to Saturday

The Rebs and Cavs pick up their game in the second inning Saturday afternoon and Vanderbilt and Texas battle for a spot in the finals later that night.

Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

There was a chance -- had Vanderbilt and Virginia won on Friday -- we weren’t going to get to watch any college baseball on Saturday. But after Texas stayed alive in an elimination game against the Commodores and Virginia-Ole Miss was washed out by a rainstorm, we find ourselves with a full slate.

A lightening strike in the top of the second inning halted the Cavaliers’ rematch with the Rebels on Friday night, and after an epic downpour flooded the outfield, the game was postponed until 3 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will resume with Virginia batting in the top of the second with men on first and second and no outs.

If Ole Miss wins and forces another game, it will be played on Sunday.

Texas and Vanderbilt will then square off in a win-or-go home finale at 8 p.m. ET to decide who moves on to the national championship series. The Longhorns forced an extra game with a 4-0 win on Friday afternoon. After losing their opening game of the College World Series to UC Irvine, they’ve rattled off three consecutive wins.

Ole Miss, who lost their opening game in a ninth-inning walkoff to Virginia before surviving Texas Tech and TCU, will be looking to replicate the Longhorns’ streak. The postponement should allow the Rebels to bring back ace Chris Ellis, who gave up just one run against the Cavs in the opening loss. It’s also expected to bring Virginia ace Nathan Kirby, who one-hit Ole Miss over seven innings in that game, back to the mound.

The question the NCAA now faces is what to do if Ole Miss wins two games in a row and advances to the finals. The finals are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and, if necessary, Wednesday. Since the Rebels would have to play on Sunday, that sets up a potential situation where they play seven times in seven days. There’s been no indication yet as to whether the NCAA would consider postponing the finals.

Here are the game times and tune-in info for Saturday:

Virginia vs. Ole Miss (resumption from Friday)

3 p.m. ET, ESPN2

Texas vs. Vanderbilt
