College World Series 2014 update: Vanderbilt walks off in extras to join Virginia in finals

The finals of the 2014 College World Series have finally been set. Several hours after Virginia finished off Ole Miss, Vanderbilt’s Tyler Campbell legged out a bases-loaded infield single to plate the walkoff run in a back-and-forth 10-inning affair. The Commodores and Cavaliers will now meet in a best-of-three national championship series beginning Monday night at 8 p.m. ET.

Virginia baffled the Rebels’ powerful offense for the second time in the 2014 tournament, holding them to just six hits on the back of a strong start from Josh Sborz. Sborz returned to the mound on Saturday after the game resumed, as it was postponed in the second inning on Friday night due to rain. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning and cruised through two more frames, finishing with one run allowed off four hits.

Artie Lewicki and closer Nick Howard combined to give up just two hits over the final four innings for the Cavs.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Will Allen came home as Virginia threw out J.B. Woodman stealing second.

Ole Miss, who started the resumption in a two-on, no-outs jam in the top of the second, used reliever Scott Weathersby to escape unscathed before turning it over to ace Chris Ellis. Ellis, who has struggled with control at times this season, had trouble finding the strikezone during a fourth inning when he gave up three runs. Two walks and a single loaded the bases before a single from Robbie Coman and a squeeze bunt from Branden Cogswell made it 3-1.

Ellis lasted only 3⅔ before being yanked. Thirty of the 68 pitches he threw were balls.

Joe McCarthy added an insurance run for the Cavs in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to right center off Ole Miss reliever Wyatt Short.

The hit that won it for Vanderbilt in the bottom of the 10th was no sexy highlight-reel smash to the outfield or liner through the gap. It was a slow-rolling grounder to shortstop that moved just slow enough for Vandy’s Tyler Campbell to beat out a throw at first and allow the walkoff run to cross the plate.

Longhorns reliever John Curtiss got two quick outs to start the bottom of the tenth, which began tied at three, but the Commodores mounted a rally. A single, walk and hit batter promptly loaded the bases. Campbell then legged out the infield single for the win.

Texas rallied back twice in the early goings to force extra innings. Vanderbilt runs in the first and second inning made it 2-0, but a bases-loaded single from Kacy Clemens (son of Roger) evened the game back up.

The Commodores opened up a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth when Rhett Wiseman doubled to deep right to plate one, but once again, Texas answered back. Tres Barrera led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple, and two batters later Zane Gurwitz singled him in for a 3-3 tie.
