NCAA Baseball Tournament 2014 scores and bracket: Texas Tech, Vanderbilt punch tickets to Omaha

After a third day of super regional play, five teams have earned a trip to the College World Series. Six clubs, including the three remaining national seeds, are competing for the last three spots.

With Louisville, Texas and UC Irvine already in, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt punched their tickets to Omaha with wins on Sunday. Virginia, the highest seeded team left in the tournament, survived an elimination game against Maryland with a late push in Charlottesville.

The two other national seeds, TCU and Louisiana-Lafayette, failed to clinch their spots, losing to Pepperdine and Ole Miss, respectively. The three undecided series will play winner-takes-all finales on Monday to set the eight-team field in Omaha.

Series tied 1-1

Facing elimination, Virginia used 17 hits and a late offensive explosion to push the Charlottesville super to a third game. Starter Brandon Waddell was dominant, allowing just one run through 5⅔ innings. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Cavs dropped a three-spot in the seventh to take control, adding insurance in the eighth and ninth. Daniel Pinero, Mike Papi and Kenny Towns each had three hits and seven of the nine Virginia starters drove in a run.

Series tied 1-1

The Horned Frogs mounted a late rally but came up just short. Having pushed two runs across in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to one, TCU had a man on with two outs. Keaton Jones came up with a clutch single and Jerrick Suitor rounded third trying to tie the game. A laser throw from center field had him beat, so he tried going up over the top of catcher Aaron Barnett, who just managed to get the tag as Suitor flipped over his head. Pepperdine’s Eric Karch then worked a perfect ninth inning to close out the win.

Series tied 1-1

After a rough opening game, Ole Miss finally got the big break it needed when UL dropped an easy fly ball in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Two batters later, freshman Colby Bortles, little brother of football star Blake Bortles, came up with a clutch bases-loaded single to push the lead to three. The Ragin’ Cajuns got a man to third in the top of the ninth, but Aaron Greenwood got a big strikeout looking to seal the win.

Texas Tech advances

For the second day in a row, Texas Tech held on for a tense one-run win, earning a pass to Omaha in the process. Four Red Raider pitchers combined for a shutout, with Dylan Dusek picking up the win after a five-inning start. The play of the game was this ridiculous diving catch from Devon Conley to save a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Vanderbilt advances

A year after getting knocked out of their own super regional by Louisville, it had to feel good for Vandy to seal a trip to Omaha on Sunday. The Commodores racked up five runs in the first inning, but Stanford pulled to within one with a four-run rally in the fourth. Four Vandy runs put the game out of reach in the seventh, and reliever Hayden Stone allowed just one unearned run over the final six innings. Fittingly, Vandy will have a chance at revenge against Louisville during a first-round matchup in Omaha.
