A year after introducing black uniforms, UCLA has new alternate uniforms once again, this time in “steel” gray. The new uniforms, dubbed “LA Steel” pay tribute to Los Angeles with the skyline on the compression sleeves under the uniform.

The gray alternate uniform is called “LA Steel.”

— adidas Football US (@adidasFballUS) July 16, 2014 The tributes to LA are relatively minor, and other than the skyline — much of which is covered up by the uniform — the metallic stripes symbolize LA’s bright lights. Plus the fact that, ya know, LA isn’t exactly known for steel production. We couldn’t even find a single fact about LA steel production. We’re sorry.
Here’s a list of cities nicknamed “Steel City,” where the uniforms might have fit a little better:
- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
- Pueblo, Colorado
- Gary, Indiana
- Cleveland, Ohio
- Youngstown, Ohio
- Lorain, Ohio
The world needs Youngstown State Steel Penguins uniforms now more than ever.
