Three French rugby players sustained a brutal attack from gang members armed with “machetes, knives and swords” in a Sunday morning attack, according to a report from The Guardian. The players are expected to make a full recovery and local police are launching a probe to try to understand how it occurred.

Aurélien Rougerie, Julien Pierre and Benjamin Kayser play for ASM Clermont Auvergne in the Top 14 league, and were runners-up in the 2013 Heineken Cup. The players were in Millau, located in the south of France where the trio were gearing up for training camp in preparation for the 2014 season.
According to the report, the players spent Saturday night at a nightclub and were returning to their hotel when they were attacked, seemingly unprovoked, by a gang of 12 brandishing the blades. Rougerie sustained the most serious injuries in the attack and required surgery to repair “deep cuts” to his hip.
There is no indication if police have suspects for the attacks.
