Mo Williams signs with Minnesota Timberwolves, according to report

Minnesota gains another veteran guard, though it’s unclear whether he’ll play with Kevin Love.

The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to rack up veterans on their bench, signing 31-year-old guard Mo Williams to a one-year, $3.75 million contract, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.

Williams will likely slot in as the team’s top backup guard, vaulting ahead of J.J. Barea, Alexey Shved and rookie Zach LaVine. He filled a similar third guard role for Portland last year, averaging just under 10 points and four assists per game in 25 minutes per contest. The Timberwolves are his fifth team in five years.

Once the top sidekick for LeBron James in Cleveland, Williams has bounced around the league since 2010. He was traded to the Clippers midway through the 2010-11 season and played behind Chris Paul for a year before being dealt to Utah. After an injury-plagued 2012-13 season, Williams signed a two year deal in Portland, with the second year a player option. He opted out and accepted this deal after also receiving interest from Dallas.

Portland was willing to move on from Williams to provide more playing time for C.J. McCollum, their 2013 first-round pick that missed time with a foot injury last season.
