U.S. Open bracket 2014 update: Serena Williams dominates, American men down to 3

It’s getting ugly for the American men who have only three left alive in the U.S. Open.

Thursday was an uneven showing for the Americans in the U.S. Open. While Serena Williams dominated as expected, several other Americans went down to the wire.

In the men’s draw, 13th-ranked John Isner narrowly defeated Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6, 6-4, 6-2. Sam Querrey upset Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Top ranked Novak Djokovic easily handled France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, while Michael Llodra and Pablo Andujar were retired early in their respective matches.

Thursday proved to be the final outing for American doubles partners Marcos Giron and Kevin King who fell to Dusan Lajovic and Joao Sousa in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. The American team of Bradley Klahn and Tim Smyczek were also knocked out at the hands of Austin Krajicek and John-Patrick Smith. Jared Donaldson and Michael Russell did advance with 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, but over fellow Americans Stefan Kozlov and Noah Rubin. Here’s an updated look at the men’s draw following Thursday’s matches.

In the women’s draw, Serena Williams took out Vania King in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Varvara Lepchenko also scored 6-4, 6-0 over Germany’s Mona Barthel. Nicole Gibbs finished strong 6-4, 6-8, 6-3 in an upset over 23rd-ranked Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

However, several underdog American women were knocked out. Coco Vandeweghe lost in straight sets to 15th-ranked Carla Suarez-Navarro 6-3, 6-3. Christina McHale went down in similar fashion to 16th-ranked Victoria Azarenka. Shelby Rogers fell 6-4, 6-3 to 11th-ranked Flavia Pennetta. The updated women’s draw can be found here.
