Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested in Baltimore Tuesday morning for driving under the influence, Maryland police announced Tuesday. Phelps was initially pulled over around 1:40 a.m. for driving a white 2014 Land Rover 84 miles per hour in a 45 zone in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95, police say. He was asked to perform a field sobriety test, which indicated alcohol in his system twice Maryland’s legal limit of .08.

Phelps was arrested for his second DUI on Tuesday.


Phelps was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, speeding and crossing a double yellow line. According to WBAL in Baltimore, Phelps was cooperative with police throughout and was later released.
The arrest is Phelps’ second DUI charge. The first came in 2004, when he was 19 years old. Phelps accepted a plea deal following the first arrest and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The 22-time Olympic medal winner retired from competitive swimming following the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but announced he was returning to the pool in April of this year.
