Mets’ Ruben Tejada breaks leg on vicious Chase Utley takeout slide

Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada was taken off the field on a cart with a broken leg after getting taken out by Chase Utley of the Dodgers on a play at second base in the seventh inning of Game 2 of their National League Division Series.

With runners on the corners and the Mets leading 2-1, Howie Kendrick hit a liner up the middle that was fielded by second baseman Daniel Murphy. The second baseman fed Tejada, but as Tejada caught the ball his back was turned, leaving him vulnerable to the late takeout slide by Utley, trying to break up any infinitesimal chance the Mets had at turning an inning-ending double play.

Tejada was flipped end-over-end on the play, and Utley even banged his head on the field.

After conferring with trainers for several minutes, Tejada’s leg was put in a brace and he was carted off. The Mets announced that Tejada suffered a broken right fibula on the play.

Amazingly, Utley was called safe on the play on replay review because Tejada was ruled to have never touched the bag. But Utley never actually touched second base in his takeout slide/tackle, either, which added to the bizarre nature of the play.
