The New York Mets rallied for two runs in the third inning in Game 4 of the World Series on Saturday night, with the second run helped greatly by an embarrassing gaffe by Kansas City Royals right fielder Alex Rios.

— MLB GIFS (@MLBGIFs) November 1, 2015 With one out and Wilmer Flores on third base, Curtis Granderson flew out to right field for a sacrifice fly. But any hope of Rios throwing out Flores at home plate was neutered by Rios thinking his catch was the third out of the inning. He took a few steps in, jogging in as if the inning was over before realizing his mistake.
Even with the delay, Rios’ strong throw made the play relatively close at home, leaving enough doubt to wonder what might have been had he paid attention.
But what made the play even more bizarre was that Flores appeared to leave early at third base. The play was challenged by Royals manager Ned Yost, but replay officials in New York ruled there was not enough evidence to overturn the call, and the run counted.
