Mary Keitany of Kenya surged ahead with about five miles to go in the New York Marathon and didn’t look back as she crossed the finish line with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 25 seconds.

The victory is the second straight for Keitany, who was 67 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Aselefech Mergia of Ethiopia. Finishing third was Ethiopian runner Tigist Tufa.

The first American to cross the finish line was Laura Thweatt, who finished seventh in her marathon debut.

Last year, Keitany ran a 2:25:07.

Keitany became the first woman since 2008 to repeat as the women’s victory when Paula Radcliffe pulled off the impressive feat. She is just the eighth woman to win the race more than once.

According to Newsday, Keitany finished the first 5K in 17:21, then was at 1:12.56 over the half-marathon mark. She is the world record holder in the 25K with a 1:19.53, which she ran in 2010.
