The Kansas City Royals captured their first World Series championship in 30 years with an impressive five-game victory over the New York Mets, culminating in a 7-2 win on Sunday night in Game 5 at Citi Field in New York. Though it was tough to single out one person in the win, catcher Salvador Perez took home World Series MVP honors.

Perez is the first catcher in 23 years to be named World Series MVP.

Perez is the first catcher to win World Series MVP since Pat Borders of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1992.
The workhorse Perez, who led the majors in games and innings caught in each of the last two seasons, was 1-for-5 with an RBI on Sunday night in Game 5, and started the 12th-inning rally with a single to right field, before getting replaced by pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson.
In the five-game series, Perez was 8-for-22 (.364) with a walk, two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. He started all 16 games behind the plate for Kansas City this postseason, hitting .259/.328/.517 with four home runs.
