Valve announces next Dota 2 major will be held in Shanghai, China

The Dota 2 major system has been a huge success, if Frankfurt is any indication. Now, we know where the next Major Championship will be held: Shanghai, China.

Dates are locked in for March 2-6, according to PC Gamer and will be held at the Mercedes Benz Arena. This will undoubtedly be the biggest tournament of all time, at least from a crowd perspective.

The arena itself holds 18,000, more than KeyArena in Seattle, which hosts The International. China is far more accustomed to treating eSports as a major event than countries in the West.

Prize money has not been announced at this time, though it’s likely it will be similar to the $3 million pool offered at the Frankfurt Major.

The first Dota 2 major was disappointing for Chinese teams, who failed to crack the highest levels of the tournament -- but that could all change on home ground.

This will be an excellent lead-up to The International 6.
