The crowd in Vegas is overwhelmingly pro-Canelo Alvarez, with a lot of boos for Miguel Cotto. Cotto does have his supporters, but they’re drowned out. At the opening bell, the crowd is hot. This is real big fight atmosphere.

The fight is underway! Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are in action in Las Vegas.
Out of the gates, Cotto shoots a right hand over Canelo’s jab, but it doesn’t get there. Big “Mexico” chant for Alvarez. A little scrap inside, nothing big lands. Both in the center of the ring, on their toes and looking for power shots. Canelo shoots a jab from distance, but too far out. Canelo lands a body shot under a missed hook from Cotto.
Jab from Canelo gets in, but Cotto answers with one of his own. Quick little hook at the end of a combo from Cotto, may have glanced Canelo a bit. Cotto with the jab again. Cotto working his left hand, lands a couple. Left hook and then a right to the body from Canelo Alvarez. Alvarez eats some body shots in return. This is very even through two minutes.
Quick little right from Canelo nicks Cotto upstairs. Cotto doubles the jab, a bit short on both. Cotto moving laterally as he throws punches, too. Canelo with a quick right, and then a left hook. Canelo with a body shot, then jabs to end the round. Cotto back with a jab. Solid opening round. A good, competitive feeling out frame. SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Cotto.
