Canelo Alvarez defeated Miguel Cotto via wide unanimous decision last night on HBO pay-per-view to win the lineal middleweight world championship and pick up the WBC middleweight title belt in a fight that more or less delivered as an event.

Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KO) won on scores of 117-111, 118-110, and 119-109, beating Cotto (40-5, 33 KO) with his power and size, while showing an improved overall boxing game that helped him combat the game plan of Cotto and trainer Freddie Roach, who aimed to frustrate Canelo with lateral movement. Alvarez, however, showed a better ability to cut off the ring than he has in the past, and was able to impose his will and turn the tide of the fight in the middle rounds.
After an impressive victory, Alvarez now appears set to return on May 7, taking over the annual Cinco De Mayo Saturday fight date that has recently been ruled by Floyd Mayweather, and hasn’t been headlined by an A-side Mexican or Mexican-American fighter since 2007, when Mayweather beat Oscar De La Hoya.
