Good morning. It’s December and the Suns already threw in the towel

That and more in Thursday’s newsletter.

WELL DONE: The NBA has partnered with anti-gun violence advocacy group Everytown For Gun Safety to run a series of PSAs beginning on Christmas. Among those involved: Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Joakim Noah and families of those affected by shootings. I spoke with a member of Everytown about how the campaign came together and what they hope it will accomplish. Thank Spike Lee.

SPEAKING OF: SI’s Deantae Prince talked to Lee and a mother whose son was killed via gun violence in Chicago about the need for change.

DOES ANYONE ELSE MATTER IN THE WEST? As Satchel Price writes, it’s the Warriors, Spurs, Thunder and then ... uh ... yeah.

ALREADY, HUH?: The Suns lost again at home to the Nuggets, and Markieff Morris took out his anger by throwing a towel at coach Jeff Hornacek. There will be discipline of some kind, according to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic. Maybe it’ll be a suspension. I’d say the best punishment is to make Morris play 48 minutes for a team he wants to leave.

THE SPURS ASCENDED TO BASKETBALL HEAVEN: This eight-pass sequence to set up David West is gorgeous. Even better: Manu Ginobili roasting Boris Diaw for not being involved in it.

NEW DUNK CONTEST FAVORITE: I did not know Kelly Olynyk had these kind of hops.

ANOTHER SMART PORZINGIS MOVE: He got out of the way of this LeBron James tomahawk instead of risking being dunked on. Don’t be a hero.

FATHER TIME’S STREAK IS IN JEOPARDY: Dirk Nowitzki passed Shaq for sixth on the all-time scoring list, and he’s not too far from 30,000.

FITTING: Deron Williams’ return to Brooklyn happened while he was in street clothes. Nets Daily has a comprehensive look back at the D-Will Era (Error).

HARD TO BULLIEVE: The Bulls are reportedly willing to trade Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson for wing help. Before you believe a deal happens, though, know that a big in-season move isn’t Chicago’s style.

WELCOME BACK: A day after watching another player have his Shaqtin’ A Fool moment, JaVale McGee returned to the blooper reel with this lefty scoop shot that went straight up ... and backwards.

ARCHERY IS AN OLYMPIC SPORT, YOU KNOW: The Nets and Mavericks played a fun overtime game, but the more entertaining battle was between their dual arrow celebrations.

LAKERS-THUNDER IN SIX SECONDS: Russell Westbrook running between four Lakers for a thunderous slam pretty much summed that game up.

SURE: Kobe Bryant compared the reality of coping with losing with trying to make a cat bark like a dog. The Lakers should hire this guy.

BOO BIRDS: I wrote about why the Pelicans have been terrible and why a return to health won’t fix their significant structural problems. They’ve improved this month, but it’s ultimately a mirage. That team needs to be reconstructed.

BECAUSE GAMES AREN’T LONG ENOUGH: The league’s referee reports indicated the Clippers were victimized by three blown calls in their one-point loss to the Thunder on Monday. Doc Rivers, who is on the NBA’s Competition Committee, believes it’s time to allow coaches to challenge calls in the last two minutes. He might challenge every call then.

THIS MIGHT REALLY BE IT: The Grizzlies lost again, this time to Garrett Temple and the Wizards. It’s been a rough start, and as Grizzly Bear Blues writes, it’s not going to get any easier.

COULD HAVE USED THIS LAST NIGHT: Learn about a brand new (fake) drug that helps East coasters stay up late to watch the Warriors.

THE RIVALRY NOBODY EXPECTED: Fun read from The Wall Street Journal’s Ben Cohen on the emerging Stephen Curry/LeBron James rivalry.

No hoops tonight. We’ll be back tomorrow with a look back at some of our best pieces involving the 10 teams in action. Merry Christmas to all those that celebrate.
