When Rex Ryan was named head coach of the Buffalo Bills in January, he guaranteed the moribund franchise would make the playoffs for the first time in 16 years. But this week, just days before the Bills play their final game of the season, Ryan said he regrets making that blustery proclamation. It's been that kind of year.
Jets vs. Bills 2016 picks and predictions: New York expected to clinch a playoff berth
Rex Ryan’s Bills have failed to live up to their head coaches hype this season, but they still have a chance to spoil the Jets’ postseason hopes.
The 7-8 Bills were never able to gain traction in any facet of the game besides racking up penalties and are now on the verge of securing their ninth losing season over the last decade. But as a consolation prize, they'll have the opportunity to spoil the 10-win New York Jets' playoff dreams when these division rivals match up Sunday. Ryan is probably jacked up for the opportunity, but it's uncertain if his team is.
Oddly enough, one of the biggest weak points on the Bills this season has been their defense. It’s ranked in the bottom half of the league in yards allowed and has failed to get to the quarterback as well. Despite a highly priced defensive line, the Bills have recorded the fewest number of sacks in the AFC.
Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick may be able to exploit a suspect Bills secondary, especially because of Brandon Marshall's and Eric Decker's recent stellar play. Marshall has amassed 576 receiving yards and six touchdowns over the last five games and Decker has added three touchdowns over the last three contests as well.
Fitzpatrick, who’s thrown for a career-high 29 touchdown passes this season, has arguably been the key to the Jets’ success. The defense was expected to be good; the offense’s potency may propel the Jets to their first playoff berth since 2010.
With a win Sunday, the Jets will clinch a spot in the postseason. Five of our experts at SB Nation expect them to accomplish that and six of CBS’ do.
