Kevin Durant undergoes second procedure on right foot

The reigning MVP will be re-evaluated in a week. The Thunder hope he’s back before the end of the regular season.

Kevin Durant has undergone another surgery on his right foot, the second procedure this season, and will be re-evaluated in one week, according to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti released a statement saying that Durant will be re-examined in one week to “determine when he will return this regular season.”

Durant underwent surgery because of continued discomfort related to the surgery he underwent in the offseason, according to Presti. There were issues with irritation from a screw placed in his foot during the first surgery. “The fracture itself is healing excellently by all accounts and we continue to feel good about the prognosis moving forward, but in the short term as he continued to have this discomfort, we wanted to determine the best way to alleviate it while still promoting the continued healing of the initial injury.”

The Thunder remain optimistic Durant will be back before the end of the regular season. The surgery comes just as the Thunder have caught fire this season -- they're 1.5 games up on the Phoenix Suns for the final playoff spot in the West.

Even though Durant has played only 27 games this season, he’s still one of the best players in the league. He’s averaging 25.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

Durant's play will be missed, but Russell Westbrook has been playing the best basketball of his career as of late. He'll need to continue to do so while the Thunder wait for Durant's return to the court.

The Thunder are 30-25 heading into Sunday night's game against the Denver Nuggets.
