In the Conference USA tournament championship on Saturday, UAB beat Middle Tennessee State 73-60 to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, their first appearance since 2011.

Hot shooting led UAB past Middle Tennessee State for an automatic NCAA Tournament bid.


On Friday, the No. 4 Blazers upset C-USA’s No. 1 seed, Louisiana Tech, blowing a 16-point second-half lead but coming back to win 72-62 in overtime. Their championship win on Saturday was much simpler, with UAB leaping out to a double-digit halftime lead that they never relinquished.
UAB shot a blistering 51.9 percent from the field while hitting nine 3-pointers. Robert Brown led the team in scoring with 22 points while adding five rebounds and four assists, while freshman William Lee added 13 more.
Middle Tennessee State was the tournament’s No. 6 seed and had advanced with an upset of its own, overcoming No. 2 UTEP 53-50 on Friday. Somebody’s run had to end, and UAB dominated from start to finish on Saturday.
