It has been years since an MVP race has been this close in the NBA, and James Harden offered up a refreshing breath of honesty when asked where he believes he stands among it.
James Harden: ‘I am the MVP’
Harden says he should be MVP. Can you blame him?
“I feel as though I am the MVP,” Harden told NBA.com’s Fran Blinebury. ”“I think the MVP is the most valuable player to your team. Obviously you have to be winning and be one of the top teams in this league and we are. I’m not taking credit away from anybody else in the league. But I’ve been consistent all year.”
If Harden wins, it's because he absolutely deserves it. He leads the NBA averaging 27.6 points and does so even while defenses key in on him nightly. The Rockets were ravaged by injuries early in the season and still are missing a couple of critical rotation pieces, but hardly missed a beat thanks to Harden's incredible season. He's also averaging six rebounds, seven assists and two steals a game.
Although six candidates have had seasons worth consideration, the race has been narrowed down to Harden and Stephen Curry in the season's final month. Curry exploded for 45 points on Thursday, which might give him the infinitesimal edge he needs to win the award. However, Harden has three more games left this year to back up his words and make his case one last time before votes are sent in.
