We’re more than halfway through the 10 races that lead up to the 141st running of the 2015 Kentucky Derby, with six horses already having tasted victory at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Kentucky Derby 2015 undercard results: 6 races are in the books
Six horses have earned victories in the lead up to the 141st Kentucky Derby.
Long-shot Paganol won the first race of the morning, taking the 1-1/16-mile allowance optional claiming for horses 3 years or older, while Island Town won a similar allowance at seven furlongs in the day’s second race. West Village finished atop an 11-horse field, taking the maiden special weight victory for horses 3 years or older on one mile of firm turf.
A real longshot, Agent di Nozzo paid $49.50 on a $2 bet in winning the day’s fourth race, a one-mile optional claiming on fast dirt. The victory in the day’s fifth race -- the Grade3 Pat Day Mile Stakes -- which was run on one mile of fast dirt, went to Competitive Edge, who paid $4.60. Divisidero won the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes, taking the 1-1/16-mile victory in Derby day’s sixth race.
Yet to come: the Grade 1 Humana Distaff Stakes, which carries a $400,000 purse for fillies and mares ages 4 or older, the $300,000 purse, Grade 2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes for fillies and mares and the $500,000 purse, Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes for horses 4 years or older.
