French Open draw 2015 announced: Novak Djokovic hopes to get first Roland Garros title

Djokovic is looking for the only Grand Slam title that has eluded him. On the women’s draw, can Sharapova stand in the way of Serena Williams?

Men’s No. 1 player Novak Djokovic is at the top of the 2015 French Open draw as he searches for his first win in the prestigious Grand Slam at Roland Garros. On the women’s side, there’s not a whole lot unexpected. World No. 1 Serena Williams is on the top, flanked by defending champion Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki.

Rafael Nadal, who comes in as the No. 6 seed, will be looking for his 10th Rolland Garros title. Then there’s Roger Federer, who is already considered a legend despite the fact that he’s still a competitor (and the No. 2 seed in the tournament). Federer has 17 Grand Slam titles to his name but he’s only ever been victorious at the French Open once in his career. Federer is expected to call it a career in the near future, and while he doesn’t need another French Open victory to secure his legacy, it’s definitely something he’s after.

Nadal hasn’t been playing his best tennis of late and that’s reflected in the seeding, but it’s not exactly a secret that he’s still the man the beat when it comes to clay. Federer knows that, Djokovic knows that and everybody else knows that. No. 13 seed Gael Monfils, No. 14 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 20 seed Richard Gasquet, meanwhile, are the best hope France has of keeping the title at home.

Williams is not at her best in clay. She has won the French Open only twice in her career and lost in the second round in 2014 to Na Li. She’s still the favorite to win it all, especially after her recent victory in the Australian open, but she’s not as big a lock to go far in Roland Garros as she is in all other Grand Slams.

Sharapova is Williams’ biggest threat. The Russian star has made it to the finals three years in a row and emerged victorious twice, losing to Williams in 2013. The two meeting in the finals is likely but Halep, Kvitova and Wozniacki could pull the upset. Things are not as wide open as in the Men’s draw but the French Open has seen unlikely contenders emerge before.
