The women’s draw got another big shakeup on Day 5 at Roland Garros, while most of the stars on the men’s side advanced easily in Thursday’s matches.

The struggles continued in Paris for fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, who was knocked out in the second round by unseeded Julia Goerges in straight sets. Wozniacki has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals at the French Open. The former No. 1 is now 4-4 against the 72nd-ranked Goerges in her career and 0-3 on clay.

Top-ranked Serena Williams, seeking her 20th career Grand Slam title, rallied from one set down to beat Anna-Lena Friedsam. No. 4 seed Petra Kvitova is also through to the third round, dispatching of Silvia Soler-Espinosa in four sets.

In addition to Williams, the rest of the American women had a strong day, going 4-0 on Thursday. No. 16 seed Madison Keys cruised in her match against Belinda Bencic, winning 6-0, 6-3. Sloane Stephens, who upset Venus Williams in the first round, also breezed into the third round with a straight-set win over Heather Watson. Unseeded Irina Falconi beat Sesil Karatancheva in three sets.

The top seeds on the men’s side had little trouble in their second round matches. No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic and No. 6 seed Rafael Nadal both won in straight sets, while No. 3 seed Andy Murray was tested by Joao Sousa before securing a four-set victory.

Both American men in action on Day 5 won their matches. No. 16 seed John Isner advanced in four sets against the Frenchman Jeremy Chardy; 22-year-old Jack Sock advanced to the third round at Roland Garros for the second year in a row with a victory over Pablo Carreno Busta.
