Colorado Rockies starter Chad Bettis took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Chad Bettis takes no-hitter into 8th inning in Rockies win over Phillies
Chad Bettis of the Rockies came within five outs of a no-hitter on Friday night, settling for two hits allowed in eight scoreless innings in a win over the Phillies in Philadelphia.

A single by Cody Asche to left field with one out in the eighth inning broke up Bettis' chances at history, but he settled for eight scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and no walks. Though he allowed two singles in the eighth inning, Bettis struck out three in the inning to keep Philadelphia off the scoreboard.
Ubaldo Jimenez has the only no-hitter in Rockies history, blanking the Braves in Atlanta on April 17, 2010.
Bettis struck out seven and walked none in his eight innings, throwing 104 pitches. This followed a career-high 8⅓ innings last Sunday in a win over the San Francisco Giants.
Before the eighth inning, the only runner to reach base was Ben Revere, who led off the seventh inning with a chopper just over the mound that got under the glove of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The play was scored an error, but just as easily could have been a hit.
Friday was just the 12th career start for Bettis, who has spent parts of the past three seasons seasons up and down between the Rockies and minor leagues. He improved to 2-0 with the win, lowering his ERA this season to 2.96 in four starts, with 22 strikeouts and only six walks.
Tulowitzki's solo home runs in the first and third innings were enough against Phillies starter Cole Hamels, who pitched eight strong innings in his own right with nine strikeouts, but suffered the hard-luck loss.
