Monta Ellis has declined his player option worth $8.3 million next season and will become a free agent on July 1, according to ESPN Dallas' Tim MacMahon.
Monta Ellis will opt out and become a free agent
Ellis has declined his $8.3 million player option. The Mavericks are not expected to re-sign him.
This was the expected decision from Ellis, who signed his three-year deal with Dallas in the summer of 2013 under market value and is looking for more guaranteed money. It has already been reported that the Mavericks do not plan on bringing Ellis back in 2015-16 should he opt out.
Per terms agreed upon when the two parties signed in 2013, Ellis had until June 24 to make a decision on his option.
Ellis averaged 19 points and five assists for Dallas on 45 percent shooting, although he only managed to knock down 30 percent of his three-pointers. The final part of his season last year was marred by attitude problems and he reportedly refused to rest an injury that led to an almost month-long slump.
The ball-dominant guard turns 30 in October. He became the first player not named Dirk to lead the Mavericks in scoring last year since Michael Finley in 2000.
